Prescription Medication Abuse Toolkit for Parents

Communities That Care of Lorain County has developed a Prescription Drug Abuse Toolkit.  The resources below are appropriate for parents (including parents, caregivers, parent supporters, foster parents, grandparents, guardians):








  • CTC Parent Fact Sheet Teens and Prescription Drug Abuse: A Parent’s Guide to Keeping your Teen Safe

  • “What to Do if your Child is Drinking or Using Drugs”  – Intervention E-Book

  • “How to Find the Right Help for Your Child with and Alcohol or Drug Problem – Treatment E-Book

  • ” How to Take Action if You Think or Know Your Child is using Drugs or Alcohol” – Time to Act

  • The Parents 360 RX Action Toolkit consists of a video, a discussion guide and a small number of documents.  This toolkit makes it very easy to share the video and have a meaningful, productive discussion about the issues of medicine abuse.

  • Prescription for Disaster – a 55-page booklet educating parents on the dangers of medication abuse and a guide on specific medications

  • The Power of Grandparents – a 20-page color booklet designed for grandparents to find out how to communicate better with their teenage grandchildren; learn about the latest drugs; and discover how to keep their grandchildren healthy

  • “Family Checkup”– a 7-page color booklet on positive parenting as prevention against drug abuse.  Includes a page each on:  communcation, encouragement, negotiaion, setting limts, supervision and knowing your child’s friends

  • Drug Guide –  A Parent’s Guide to the Legal Drugs Kids are Using and Abusing

  • “Generation RX – Parent Outreach” – Toolkit designed for presentation to parent groups.  Includes brochure, presentation and evaluation survey

  • “Parent Contract” – a 2-page contract for child and parental agreement around Alcohol and Other Drug use and responses
