Prescription Medication Abuse Toolkit for Medical Personnel

Communities That Care of Lorain County has developed a Prescription Drug Abuse Toolkit.  The resources below are appropriate for medical personnel  (including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, emergency medical technicians):

 

 

 

 

  • CTC Teen Card, perfect for physicians to start the conversation with Teens about prescription drug abuse and locking prescription medications to reduce access
  • CTC Patient Card , is a great handout for physicians to share with parents of teens

  • Help your Doctor Read Between the Lines encourages patients to discuss any and all drug use – including prescription and over the counter medications with their doctors and other healthcare professionals.

  • Prescription Drugs” raises consequences of improper use of prescription drugs and contrasts it with the benefits of safe and proper prescription drug use

  • Screening for Drug Use in General Medical Settings, provides clinicians serving adult populations in general medical settings with the tools and procedures necessary to conduct screening, brief intervention, and/or treatment referral for patients who have or be at risk of developing a substance use disorder

  • This screening tool guides clinicians through a series of questions to identify risky substance use in their patients; prevent escalation to addiction; increase awareness and substance abuse interactions with patient’s medical background; identify patients in need and refer to treatment; providing patient feedback and arranging for specialty care, where necessary using the 5 A’s of intervention – educational messages encouraging medical personnel to influence their teen patients’ decisions on how they use prescription drugs
